“NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING”

David Granger writes in the January 2011 edition of Esquire:

(…) “our culture is overrun with pundits and commentators -especially in the worlds of sports, entertainment, and politics- who sit behind a desk and in front of a camera and gas on about what is going to happen. It’s just about the only thing we produce anymore: unfounded opinion and vitriolic prediction.”

Couldn’t agree anymore… except that in Spain, we just don’t care anymore about politics. What I mean is that the damage has been so big, we have long ago lost faith in anything that deals with politics. Hence the lack of a large number of pundits in the field.

BTW: If you haven’t checked out yet the iPad edition of Esquire, I urge you to do it. Pleasure to read, pure joy.

In memory to my grandparents.

****

My grandfather, who lived to the age of 93, had a scotch every day of the last seventy years of his life. He only allowed himself a second one on saturday nights -he went to dinner out with my grandmother each and every saturday for 50+ years-, and when the United States had some kind of military incident around the world.

Most times it would work like this: News about some incident would break and he would call me and invite me over to his place. There, I would operate the satellite system to tune CNN on, and we would watch the news together.
With a glass of scotch.
